The Role of Health Psychologists in Smoking Cessation |
This is a 5 page paper on the role of health psychologists in smoking cessation. The Website of the Health Psychology Associates (http://www.healthpsych.com/) addresses issues related to the research, treatments and role of health psychologists in the health care setting. One area of particular concern for health psychology is smoking. Essentially, health psychologists are concerned with the psychological and biomedical reasons for why people are addicted to smoking and have difficulty stopping and what treatment programs can be initiated to help people stop smoking. Research has found that people begin and continue smoking from a combination of social, psychological, and biological factors. In smoking cessation therapies health psychologists have found that a combination of psychological, social and biological factors are also the most effective in that patients are instructed on the use of nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) in addition to the more important aspects of personal and social counseling, coping strategies, skill management and stress reduction throughout the stages of contemplation of smoking cessation through until well after action and maintenance of smoking cessation. The Effectiveness of Zyban (Bupropion) on Smoking Cessation |
This is a 5 page paper discussing the effectiveness of Zyban on smoking cessation. In the past seven years, several trials have been undertaken to determine the effectiveness of the anti-depressant prescription drug Zyban (bupropion) in regards to smoking cessation. Historically, nicotine-replacement therapies, such as the nicotine patch, have been considered the first line of therapy in smoking cessation. Studies involving Zyban however, a slow-release drug in tablet form and not nicotine-based, have shown that Zyban has been twice as effective at smoking cessation in both short-term and long-term abstinence rates. Zyban is also considered one of the least expensive therapies available in addition to its providing fewer withdrawal side effects. Because of these recent successful trials on Zyban, health care professionals believe that it should be considered as the first line therapy in smoking cessation and it has now been included in the coverage of several health care plans. Indoor Smoking Should Be Made Illegal |
12 pages in length. Smoking indoors imprisons nonsmokers to breathe the same polluted air that fills the space around smokers. Nonsmoking sections have done little to appease the nonsmoking public and allow them to enjoy a meal or a night on the town without being overwhelmed by the stifling impact of secondhand smoke, particular when there is no tangible barrier between the two sections. All in all, the nonsmoking section was created to mollify complainants rather than address the problem. As such, nonsmokers are being stripped of their right to enjoy public venues without the intrusion of secondhand smoke, a fact that is politically - and physiologically - unacceptable in a democratic society. Bibliography lists 12 sources. |
